Construction work on the
long-overdue third phase of the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme
at Karimadom Colony has begun. While no formal inaugural ceremony was held, the
Corporation set about demolishing the remaining dwellings in the area to make
way for construction of the new flats here on Thursday.
The implementation of the project
here became complicated primarily because the new flats are not being built on
vacant land.
The dwellings of residents here have
to be demolished first.
Financial support
The blocks are being built with the
financial support of the Union government.
A temporary shelter or
rehabilitation block for families who had no other accommodation options was
readied a few months ago, but a toilet block and kitchen was inaugurated only
on Tuesday by Mayor K. Chandrika
.
Nine blocks
Corporation standing committee
chairpersons Palayam Rajan, V.S. Padmakumar, and S. Pushpalatha were also
present. Nine blocks would be built under the third phase, each of which
consisted of 20 units.
180 families
In total, 180 families would be
housed here. The Centre for Science and Technology for Rural Development
(COSTFORD) is the construction agency and the work is expected to be over in 10
months. The same organisation had built flats under phases I and II.
